After the demise of his relationship with his childhood sweetheart, Janey, Jesse needs to get away. His nan has just the thing: a month-long cruise around Hawaii and the Pacific Islands. It seems perfect—until Jesse realizes what kind of cruise it is.

Since Jesse’s roommate, Daniel, is recovering from a broken heart, the two decide to buddy up. They hit it off, and with Daniel now Jesse’s partner in crime, they explore the boat and participate in all the fun activities on offer—with some, ah, interesting results for straight boy Jesse.

“Gay As Mardi Gras by Lily Velden grabbed me from the moment I read the title and kept me fully immersed in the delightfully romantic and problematic journey that Jesse undertakes to discover himself. Until now Jesse has always insisted he’s straight, contrary to what his sweet and uproariously funny Nan thinks.
…For a short story there’s surprising depth to both the characters and storyline. …It’s Nan who steals the show even though we only have brief scenes with her.
My rating for this is an A.

“…Gay as Mardi Gras is one of the funniest and most honest books I’ve read this year. I actually devoured this short novel in a few hours’ time, laughing until my sides hurt. Watching Daniel overcome his heartache and seeing Jesse discover something so important about himself was a delight. The author has a real knack for humorous dialogue and embarrassing situations. An amazingly funny and sweet book, Gay as Mardi Gras is a winner of a short novel.”

“Short, sexy and steamy… my three favorite colors! After breaking up with his long-term girlfriend, Jesse’s Nan sends him on a month-long cruise. It’s not until the ship sets sail that he realizes it’s actually a gay cruise. You see, Jesse’s Nan believes him to be gay, even though he has always dated women. He and his cabin mate, Daniel, quickly form a friendship and a “you watch my back, I’ll watch yours” type of relationship.
As days become weeks, it becomes harder for Jesse to ignore the foreign feelings he’s developing for Daniel. These two don’t fall in love, or into bed quickly. It’s a slow burn that develops over time, solidifying what could be just what each man is looking for. A battle of wills ensues between Jesse’s heart and mind, all the while Daniel waits patiently for Jesse to admit how he feels.
I liked the fact that the two ML developed a friendship first, building the trust and laying a foundation. The inner dialogue that bounced around in Jesse’s mind added humor to the story and made it a lighthearted read. I would love to see more from these two, and although the story ended well, there is definitely an opening for another story.
My only complaint would be the lack of detail when these two finally consummate their relationship. There were pages and pages of hot as hell foreplay, then when they finally do the deed; it’s only a few sentences. Overall, this was a quick, captivating read and I would recommend to any M/M romance fans.”
